The Du Toit Cycles Cycling Team 2004 Double Century
The Du Toit Cycles Cycling Team notched up an impressive overall tenth
place out of 84 teams in the gruelling “Double Century” 202km team race on
29 November 2004. The first six riders of the twelve man team took
06:49:06 to cross the finishing line at an average speed of 29,87kph.
This is a marked improvement over last year when the Du Toit team came 23rd
out of 75 teams in 07:35:41. The race was hotly contested with only
seconds separating some of the top ten teams.
Except for Francois, the team has very little ultra racing experience
making their ride even more impressive. The route and conditions were
tough with riders having to battle with other teams, wind and high
temperatures. There were 935 riders in 84 teams at the start. Only 728
finished before the 12 hour cut-off time. The route from Ceres over the
Swaarmoed and Theronsberg mountain passes to Touwsriver and back had more
than 80km of passes or hills translating into a total ascent of 2500
